Mmmmm, nothing better than a piping hot bowl of oatmeal on a cold winter morning. Ok, something better - a piping hot bowl of healthy oatmeal that your kids eat up happily :-)
Here's a tip to get your kids to eat a big, healthy breakfast AND like it!
Here's what you need:
Plain oatmeal (I prefer the "whole oats" that you cook yourself, but you can use instant too. Whatever floats your boat). The other fun part of the non-instant kind, is you get a fun container to make a craft with later ;-)
Lots o' fun toppings...You can seriously use whatever you have around - trail mix, fresh fruit, dried fruit, canned fruit, frozen fruit (defrosted of course)...We used dried cherries, raisins, dried cranberries, freeze-dried strawberries, walnuts, bananas, apples, chocolate chips, and brown sugar.
Here's what you do:
1. Cook your oatmeal. If you're using the non-instant kind, it's really easy to make a whole bunch at once. I was making enough for four people - two adults and two children, so I made a lot. I put five cups of water into a pot, brought it to a boil with a little salt. Then added three cups of oats. Cooked for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. And it was done! Of course, you can vary the amount of water to make your oatmeal the consistency your family prefers.
2. While the oatmeal cooks, put the toppings into bowls for the kiddos to enjoy.
3. Give everyone a bowl of plain oatmeal, and let them have fun!
4. And a tip for the leftover dried fruit/nuts - dump it all together into a bag and make a trail mix :-)
