Fabric Scrap Paper Dolls

The first project we attempted with the lovely little template my friend created for us (I think she needs a name – maybe we’ll call her “Kayla” after her artist creator!) was fabric scrap paper dolls! This was a blast. I had the idea for this project a few weeks ago, so I’ve been setting aside my fabric scraps for the past few weeks. If you don’t want to wait, or don’t normally purchase fabric, don’t fret. Felt is cheap (usually about a quarter per 8” x 10” piece at the craft store) and works great. Ribbon, buttons, rick rack, and yarn would work great too. Also, “fat quarters” are inexpensive fabric squares you can usually find in the quilting section of fabric stores. It’s a quarter yard of fabric, but instead of being cut at the 9” x 44” that a standard “quarter yard” would be cut at if you took it to the cutting counter, these are pre-cut to 18" x 22". They’re perfect for small projects that you just want a small piece of fabric for.

Here’s what you need:
“Kayla” template
Fabric scraps, ribbon, yarn, string, buttons, bows, etc.
Glue sticks
Scissors

Here’s what you do:

1. Cut out whatever shapes of fabric you want to make the dress, shoes, hair for your doll.

2. Glue them onto your template.

3. Pretty straightforward. We had fun experimenting with different types of fabrics and different ways of cutting. By virtue of a happy accident, we discovered that if you cut fleece into small stringy pieces and then tug it, when you release the piece it curls! So we made curly hair for one of our dolls.
