Clementine Candle
We buy clementines by the caseload this time of year - they're so sweet, yummy, and easy for kids to peel. So when I saw this idea on Apartment Therapy, I HAD to try it. And it was so much fun I just had to share!
Now, obviously the lighting of an oil-filled candle is not a kid-friendly activity, BUT they can help make it and LOVE watching it.
Here's what you need:
A clementine
A sharp knife
Cooking oil (any kind will do)
A lighter
Clay (optional)
Here's what you do:
1. Cut a ring around the outer edge of the clementine - the center AWAY from the two end points.
2. Carefully remove the two halves of the peel. Leave the little pointy white portion intact (this forms the "wick"). Eat the clementine fruit (yum).
3. Fill the "wick" half with oil. Let it sit so the oil get soaked up into the "wick".
4. My clementine was a little wobbly and the oil would was spilling out, so I made a small base out of some Fimo polymer clay that I had laying around. It held the clementine in place perfectly.
5. Cut a small opening in the other half of the skin for airflow.
6. Light the "wick," place the other half on top, gaze adoringly at your creation.
